Ms. Vasquez's Philosophy
John Dewey’s theory of constructivism is the philosophy theory that I believe the most in. It states that learning arises from the student themselves. Rather than learning through hearing, the student learns by doing. Constructivism requires very kinesthetic learners who are willing to learn. The theory of constructivism states that there are twelve essential principles. Some of these principles are – “encouragement and acceptance of student initiative, utilization of raw data and primary sources along with manipulatives, interactive, and physical materials. When planning, teachers use cognitive terminology. Also, the engagement of students in experiences that might engender contradictions to their hypothesis and then initiate discussion”
By having kinesthetic learners, I believe, that the students will be able to attain more of the subject matter in which they are learning. Constructivism makes the learning material much more interesting for the learner, because it is the learner themselves that has to achieve their own personal motivation to accomplish their goals.
Having a personal philosophy is an important part of being an educator. I chose to be an educator because I believe that it is my calling. I have tried being in other professions, but none have made more happy than being a teacher. Being an educator in today’s society is not an easy thing to achieve, especially because of the diverse population that this world brings together. However, having that population makes it that much more challenging, and interesting profession. I chose the constructivism theory mainly because of what it entails. Since, I personally, am a kinesthetic learner; I fit in perfectly with John Dewey’s theory. I wouldn’t change who I am or the way I learn and teach. The only thing that I can hope for is that the way I teach, is the way that my students will enjoy learning.
